I have only gone to Wynberg home affairs so can't compare it to other branches, but overall I was satisfied with my experience here and didn't have any problems except that it seemed to go a bit slower, and things could have been handled better so my time would not be wasted

I went to Home Affairs on Saturday after receiving 2 sms to tell me that my passport was ready for collection.

I got there on Saturday just after 11, only to be told sorry Collection department is closed already at 7am because they already took the quota for the day! We closed after a certain amount of people got numbers then you need to put a fine print on the website that tells people that only a certain amount of people get taken on a Saturday. I witnessed an elderly couple turned away as well who could have been in the seventies,
I spoke to one of the supervisors that worked at counter number 12, I never got the ladies time but she was at least willing to help me as a customer. But after speaking to the manger she was told straight no.

But what is more upsetting is that the collections are your quickest lines, and that I notice from when I sat applying for my passport. And on Saturday the collections area must have had about 5 people waiting to be serviced.

I have mixed feelings about this home affairs office. Obviously nobody enjoys home affairs, however some things can make an experience easier. This home affairs has a very odd queuing system - hand-written numbers on slips of paper while outside the doors, computerized numbers once you're inside - strange to me, but they seem to understand it. That being said, don't expect the process to be a quick one. Even if you arrive at 7am, expect to be there for between 3-7 hours. Though they have possibly 16 teller-tables, I haven't seen more than three open. It's also freezing inside - better than stuffy, but bring a jersey and book for while you wait.
Also, don't even try go during school holidays - this home affairs has a very strict cut off policy. Even during normal working days they cut off business after a certain number of people have gone through - usually around midday. I'm not certain as to why. During school holidays however, this limit has been reached (numbers handed out) by 8am, and even those in the queue will wait hours.
Past that, the tellers are friendly enough and once processed, documents arrive quickly (new ID within 2 days!).

As much as people complain about home affairs, i've had quite a pleasant experience. Went nice and early, barely a queue, they sorted me out quickly, very professional. Nice to start your day on such a good note, thank you

They have their positives and negatives, but spending 2-3 hours in the queue is what caught me off-guard. One has to go early to leave early. They're quite helpful, but maybe should work on trying to speed-up their service. be prepared to spend your whole morning here.
