The museum tells a story of a time when things were quite different from today. It's a very interesting experience and if you love history and other cultures as much as I do definitely a must see. Take your time to soak up the ambience - it's worth every second !

I recently went to this museum while on a family holiday. What makes the museum so unique and different is that not only does it have the history on this area but all the wonderful incredible memories. They have found past residents and captured their memories and precious moments. Everything has such a personal feel. It is definite must see when you are in Cape Town.

The District Six Museum is magnificent in its sincerity and modesty

As stated on the museums website: "The Museum represents a living memorial and is more than just a static display. Through this space we have created an arena, which enables us to reaffirm our identity, celebrate our heritage and confront the complexities of our history." Vincent Kolbe- Ex-resident and Museum Trustee.

This describes the museum perfectly. The displays take the visitor through a journey of the life and times of people in district six. Areas that show what a "typical" house looked liked, the wash houses, the "steps", the gangs, street signs, family recipes, messages of remembrance and much more. It’s amazing how the curators have managed to capture these facets of district six bring their story to life. The photography is stunning.

It is not a museum designed to install a feeling of guilt but rather a feeling of nostalgia for a place and time we will never get to experience.

DO NOT MISS THIS ON YOUR VISIT TO CAPE TOWN.
