Recently visited Robben Island after friends recommended we go. I was disappointed as I found it long and a bit boring. We were taken on a very old trawler and for the money it costs that is not acceptable. I enjoyed seeing Nelson's cell and the Tour Guide new his stuff but would I recommend it to others no. The so called cafe stop the coffee machine was broken but they did have delicious biscuits!!!

Definitely worth a visit as it is part of our South African history, I was just disappointed that it is not kept to what it originally was, and I would have preferred it if the tour was not so rushed. It was a great feeling however to see Nelson Mandelas cell, even though it has been "modernised" to a certain extent.

Not kept quite as original as it should

Probably one of those 'pilgrimages' that should (and will) be made both by South Africans and foreign tourists alike. There are 2 trips each day - one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Leaving from 'Mandela Gateway" at the Waterfront V&A Harbour in Cape Town, we drew the short straw by missing the morning trip by minutes, and then being shuttled to and fro in the 'old lady' trawler - the Dias, as opposed to the sleeker, newer and faster Thembekile ! Anyhow, it did add some character to the voyage, which was a nice experience. Once on the island, one is shuffled into a tour bus, which then shuttles around the island sites, to the accompaniment of a tour guide - quite informed, with an interesting and informative patter. A short stop at 'the cafe' - with unfortunately a broken coffee machine .... The tour then takes smaller groups - led by former inmates (quite a novel idea which adds authenticity and a personal touch !) through the cells, including that of Madiba. Not really THAT much to see, and certain people seemed to get quite exasperated, but one just has to click into Cape Town mode, slow down and let things be ... and that's the end ... a short walk to the quay and reboarding for the trip back. An interesting experience, but one which could be made better / more interesting with a dash of marketing woema and panache ?!?

Whilst this trip might not be for everyone, I was very moved by my experience on Robben Island. As a young South African, I am sad to say that I did not realize just how much history was on this little island off our coastline. Sure, I knew that Mandela and a few other important political prisoners were incarcerated there. I didn't know the rest though - the leper colony, the life of the wardens, the isolation homes. The escape stories. The struggle and the strife. The cruelty of having no windows. The cold. Sparks was a phenomenal tour guide who gave me a glimpse of what life was like on the island (he himself being an ex-convict of Robben Island). He even spoke with an accent not dissimilar to Tata Madiba.

Foreigner or South African, everyone (especially those part of the Rainbow Nation) should make the pilgrimage across the ocean to learn and absorb this piece of our history, of Madiba's legacy.

That being said, it is a LOT further than it looks so if you are a motion sick traveler like I am, then make sure you are up for the long boat ride (IT IS WORTH IT!!).

Cant say I would recommend this trip to anyone. Unfortunately its a South African phenomena that most of the cells are missing items - how sad - the "display" is therefore not as it is meant to be. The only interesting part for me was the tour guide, otherwise I would have wept with wasting my well earned money.

Simply a truly amazing experience! Went to Cape Town and this was one of the main reasons for the visit. Our tour guide was really good as he explained everything in depth and kinda made it feel as if we were part of the story. The main highlight was when we visited his cell and just experienced goosebumps, in a good way!

More people need to spend time appreciating South African history. You'd think visiting the Museum would be boring, but hey, what a fun-filled day it was. I've learnt so many new things, makes one truly proud to be a SA citizen, and count our blessings for all the struggles our ancestors faced. Amandla!

I believe everybody should visit Robben Island at least once. It has great historical significance. The staff on the island are well informed and knows their subject matter well. It's a very emotional journey but also very inspiring.

Every South African has to make this visit .. its a part of our past and defines our future. Like all things we need to learn from the past. Informative .. and worth a visit. And a trip even kids would enjoy. I would not however go on a very choppy or windy day .. the swells can be huge getting to island! So yea take a packed lunch ... and go and discover a part of our history.
