The combined area of the dam and its gardens is over 81 hectares, which is fortunate as this glorious emerald of a park, with its contrasting areas of activity and serenity, draws an inordinate amount of visitors on a daily basis. The park is only six kilometres from the city centre. Located at the northeast side of the park, the dam is a popular destination for energetic canoeists and small-boat enthusiasts.

The gardens are an excellent place to get in touch with nature in the middle of a bustling city.
Its a great location to relax and read a book, have a picnic or play some outdoor sports with the kids.

I had an excellent day walking the dogs with my family.

The gardens are well maintained and clean, which is good.

The Botanical Gardens have a beautiful collection of stunning Roses and for that reason only it is worth a visit. It is a huge area and part of it is more for walking dogs and having exercise while the other part is better maintained and much more appealing.
Besides the roses there is a succulent garden and a herb garden. However although there is a large collection of herbs they are badly maintained and the names are missing in many cases. A representative of the garden explained that there are very few permanent gardeners working in the botanical gardens and they do not have the resources to employ more. It would be great if some of the local gardening enthusiast could lend a hand and help out in the gardens on a voluntary basis.

With the wall at Emmarentia Dam being closed until supposedly the 12th December (I will believe it when I see it), I am missing driving home that route so much at the moment!! I often drive into the Botanical Gardens just to have a look at the magnificent variety of plants and trees and how well it is all maintained. The water levels are so low at the moment that I wonder how it is affecting the gardens!! My daughter is celebrating her birthday tomorrow so she, her hubby and a number of friends visited here on Sunday and had a picnic. I have to say the municipality do a magnificent job of maintaining the whole area. Now please give us access over the dam wall again so that we get to enjoy from Marks Park all the way to Beyers Naude Drive again!!

Emmarentia Dam is one of my favourite places to visit for a picnic, go for a walk, fly a kite,a game of volley ball or even croquet. The gardens are always beautifully maintained and the parking is secure. I also love the fact that they offer a section to allow you to walk your dogs. The dam bridge is closed at the moment which does mean you might have to navigate your way around to get to the rose garden entrance,

I love Emmerentia Dam. The gardens are my favourite place in Joburg. To go for a walk, to sit and think, for picnics, for escaping - I love this place. I love sitting and watching the ducks or walking through the trees - it's so peaceful and very conveniently placed - there is also plenty of parking and I've never felt unsafe or scared there.

I have always enjoyed meandering around the Emmarentia Dam, especially with my pups. It is a lovely environment to host a picnic, and attending their frequent concerts is always a wonderful experience too! I would advise going in numbers, as I know that it can be a little risky to be by yourself in the early mornings and evenings!

We have been here for concerts and just to spend days out. Quiet enjoyable experience. Just taking walks along the dam or reading a book while relaxing is great. The park is clean and is pretty popular so sometimes parking is a bit of an issue. We felt safe everytime we went there but it was always busy when we went.Good place to wind down and relax, and take in nature

We love this place! Emmarentia is such a stunning setting for a picnic or concert. We recently went to see the Lumineers when they performed here and the venue was so well done. Best day! And this last weekend we had a picnic for my husband's birthday and it was genuinely such a great time.
I have heard stories of safety issues so I'm not sure that I would take a trip there alone, but for a group or a couple to have a nice chilled day out, it's fantastic!

Having been a resident of the area since the 1960's, it may surprise many to know that the JBG was a motley collection of 'veld', a rubbish dump (Yes !), a lone soccer field (nicknamed 'Sparta' !) , as well as the Rose Garden on the (more civilised) northern edges. Over a few years during the 1970's and beyond, the Joburg City Council / Parks Department put in a lot of time, money and effort to create the complete beautiful facility which exists today, and which is being developed to this day. Certainly not in the league of Kirstenbosch (which is an indictment to SA's economic hub), there is of course much more that can be done to keep improving this facility for Johannesburgers of current and future generations . At this stage, well done to those responsible for maintaining this great facility ! Lets keep on keeping on - can't let Cape Town put us to such shame ?!?

I love these gardens. It gets busy over weekends, particularly Sundays. It is not uncommon to find wedding photo shoots. The dam is popular for fishermen, people with canoes and small sailing boats and the casual romantic. Summer times are the best with everything lush and green, flowers are blooming and the warm temperature crowds-in visitors.

You'd need to be a bit careful on weekdays and late at night as safety can be an issue.

Graet place to relax and have a family Sunday get together.Or a place to take a book and read, absrobing the surroundings. My little niece loves running aorund in the park with wide open space, kicking soccer ball. Good plae to take a stroll down to the dam to see the ducks waddling along. Definitely a must for any nature lover or someone who just wants to take in nature and enjoy a relaxing day out

I was initially a bit hesitant to go here. I thought wide open spaces would be a bit dangerous. This was not at all the case and overall I felt very safe. This is the best venue I have been to for a picnic and I would definitely recommend this place for a picnic or a day out with the family. A must see gem in Johannesburg!
