In South Africa, high school begins at grade 8. Students study for five years, at the end of which they write what is known as matric. As of 2008, students sit the National Senior Certificate examinations, which replaced the Senior Certificate and Further Education and Training Certificate. To progress on to university, students must attain a pass in their Home Language, an Additional Language, Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy, and Life Orientation, as well as at least three electives, see further under National Senior Certificate.

Before our daughter started high school, we visited many high schools in many areas. Nothing could dissuade our daughter from wanting to go to Northcliff High. She had been to Northcliff Primary, all her friends were going to Northcliff High, so we finally agreed to let her go there (but kept doors open at a couple of excellent schools in Bryanston/Fontainebleau). From the very start of her high school career we could see there was excellent discipline, encouragement to not only achieve academically but sports wise too. The teachers were very approachable to the pupils and our daughter grew from strength to strength. When the matric results came out (and it was once again a 100% pass rate) these pupils didnt look to see whether they had passed or not, they looked to see how many distinctions they got!! Eight years have passed since she matriculated. She and her click of friends are all degreed, still remain the best of friends. They have all been each others bridesmaids, best friends and are always there for each other. A great start at Northcliff High has led to confident well educated adults.

I suppose there is an element of bias in my review as I am a past pupil, but Northcliff High has continued to go from strength to strength. They have achieved in all spheres from sports to academics to cultural activities. The staff at Northcliff are probably one of its greatest assets and their passion for their subjects has ensured an excellent academic performance with the matric classes almost always having a 100% pass rate and the vast majority of the students exempt for university. I have friends with younger siblings still in the school and the standards have not changed since I was there. They recently completed the construction on their astro turf which will no doubt be a great asset to the hockey teams. The athletics team have led Northcliff to victory in the A-league inter-high athletics for something like 16 years! It's a great school and just goes to show that private schools are not the only future for our children in SA. I hope to send my kids to NHS one day.
