Having just renewed my driver's licence, I would like to say that the standard of interaction between public and staff at the Marlboro Licencing Dept is shocking. The staff give the impression they are doing the public a huge favour by being there at all and all courtesies such as "Good Morning" or "Sorry to have kept you waiting" are dispensed with entirely. Rather, a sullen face at the other side of the desk is all that greets you. They are without doubt the rudest people I have ever come across.

If I could give a place no star - I would! So I've had to settle for 1 star rating (which they don't deserve anyway).

There's internal conflict happening between all of the local driving schools and the Marlboro Licensing Department to the point that driving schools are boycotting the department and no driving school will go in to do your test. I was at Marlboro before my lesson-time started and my rented truck vehicle from a driving school (that isn't of a local driving school) couldn't enter the Marlboro testing grounds because of the local driving schools that are on strike and threatening to use violence if any driving school vehicle attempts to enter the Marlboro testing grounds.

So immediately then I am a victim in this situation and am inhibited from doing my Code 10 driver's licence test. The employees in the enquiry/cashier offices genuinely sympathised my situation and willingly referred me upstairs to the manager of Marlboro Licensing Department - and she was completely hostile and uncooperative on her part. She eventually settled my interaction with her by stating that the testing ground isn't stopping anyone from testing and because of that - she doesn't feel merciful for the fact that I spent 3.5hrs queueing to book for this test two days prior, nor having spent R240 to book this test...just to be prevented from doing my test at the grounds & falling a victim because of this situation. She additionally says that I must request a refund from my driving school...which didn't reside well with me because:

1 - I paid for my driving license at the cashier office *OF* the Marlboro Licensing Department and not the driving school

2 - My driving school came from another part of JHB and actually wanted for me to do my test on the day as they weren't aware and weren't a part of this 'driving school boycott' to begin with

So for this manager to have dismissed me in the way that she did, when her employees working underneath her actually understood and showed some sympathy to this situation of mine as well as went as far as to suggest what I should possibly do next...was just highly atrocious to put it lightly. Yes - there's definitely unhappy dealings and blatant internal conflict between Marlboro Licensing Department and the driving schools locally (to which a Marlboro employee downstairs said to me that it's been ongoing for approximately two weeks). So why doesn't she and her department make a concerted effort to WARN customers of this existing dispute and the possibility that if a learner plans to test (using a rental/branded driving school truck vehicle and not their own) - that they may be denied that chance to test (even if learners have gone through the dismal service and mandatory protocol at this place of queuing and paying for their chance). And that rather these learners must be encouraged to go elsewhere like Randburg or Bedfordview instead of wasting precious time and money.

There's seriously no harm in that, I would have immediately understood and thanked an employee for mentioning that beforehand. But the manager was just too partial and impatient to have liaisoned and reasoned this possibility and mutual understanding at all with me. Instead, she asked me to step outside her office. Fantastic service and courtesy demonstrated in that interaction between myself and her - surprising moreover for the fact that I never once used vulgar words, raised my voice or was irrational about the situation entirely. So I was completely disappointed with this place and will never go back again.

Wasted money from Uber rides and paid bookings at this place are salvageable. But wasted time and frustration caused by their incompetence to address their issue, and their failure to put their customers' interest and satisfaction FIRST is just a huge insult to myself and the many other customers who have fallen a victim of this whole ordeal.

I was very dissapointed after wasting my time coming to book for my DL and was given a date for testing. Arriving on the day as i am to go get tested you tell me of inconviniences regarding my work permit that your department could have rectified but did not till last minute of testing. I want my refund for the trouble of booking, never mind time wasted in coming to your station to book and test and be told cannot happen. I have not heard from your manager regarding your endless rules that seem to change last minute. Being a foreigner in a foreign country i will never be welcomed does not mean i should be discriminated for every effort i try to go legit. Please process my refund i will book elsewhere.

We have just experienced terrible service at the Sandton Licensing department. Having booked to write the Leaners Licence, sat in the queue and completed everything asked for we were given a date for the 22nd of August at 8am for my son to complete his learners licence. I have taken the day off work to take him to the testing station and we arrived at 7h30 to complete the exam at 8am. At 8am the supervisor started calling our names, and my sons name was called and he went in. The supervisor then told all the people to go out of the room and only people with double receipts could enter. Without telling the 10-15 people outside what was happening she just left us outside and started the test. Looking into the room THERE WAS ENOUGH SPACE FOR EVERYONE TO COMPLETE THE TEST EVEN THOSE OF US OUTSIDE. Once the people inside had started she came outside and said we could not write the test as last week the computers were down and these people had to write the test today. When we complained that actually THERE WAS ENOUGH SPACE she merely said that her manager had said we could not write. We all consulted with her manager and the manager of the testing station who conceded that we should have been able to write and that this was their error. However they would not allow us to write at the 10am session stating that the system would not allow them to log in at 10am. When asked if we could write the next day the manager stated that they are not running learners license test again for this week and it seems that they only complete 1 week of testing a month. Some of the people who had came to write and were turned away had woken up at 5am this morning and had to catch two taxis to get to the station. The people at the station did not even care about our inconvenience and were most rude in dealing with this situation.

I went to Sandton Licensing in Marlboro to book for my learners asked the lady at the door where do i stand the queue she gave me a foms show me where to sit and do eye testing etc. I got there around 7.30am before even 10am I was done with the booking. I am also impressed because the date they gave was for the next 3 weeks which i thought it was too fast. No the service was amazing looking forward going there again.

Time to renew my drivers licence. This time I was prepared, had my photos taken and copy of ID. I pitched at the centre early in the morning to avoid long queues. Within 45 minutes I was done. Although this a breaking record for a public service, I found that there was no one available to help you with questions or enquiries. You just merely went with the flow and asked the people waiting in the queue to check if you are following the right line. The payment queue was also not clearly evident. The post application was the real issue. I was told that the licence would be ready in 6 weeks but I can come around the 3 week timeframe. I tried phoning the centre at different times to verify if my licence is ready instead of driving all the way there, sadly there was no response at all- unprofessional I would say.
