I have read the students' very disturbing comments on the quality of service at UNISA. What went wrong ? I studied for a LLB degree at UNISA and graduated in May 2007. The quality of service was excellent. Although i am a resident of Kenya, All study materials came on time (except once when a textbook on "forensic medicine" was out of stock). The exam timetable / calendar issued at the beginning of the year was strictly followed. Exam results were out on the due date (except for December 2006 but an apology was issued in good time). Even then, results were out in 3 days thereafter. The quality of education was excellent. What went wrong? I would otherwise have no hesitation in recommending UNISA to other students. it is regrettable that its association with other established Kenyan Institution of learning was discontinued. Bulk mailing made things easier.

I am second year unsatisfied PhD candidate in computer science at UNISA. Their PhD programs are low quality fully dissertation type. The quality of education and the quality of the professors are low, They do not know very well the area they teach while their research is poor. The truth is, this university is popular in Africa, I don’t think with a degree from UNISA you may go far. They have very low graduation rates, low research output, communication problems with supervisors and with university general (imagine to communicate with supervisors only by e-mail and wait back for response 1 month and skype with them one time per month and only if they are available), low global reputation, honestly I am thinking to give up. My opinion is if you want to do a PhD in computer science go to other real university with professors who they know how to teach, know the area they teach and doing serious research. I am not suggest UNISA, the cheap is NOT always good.

I seriously don't understand why Unisa is called the University of SOUTH AFRICA!!You get there and the consultants give you attitude.First of all they're not wearing name badges.I went to the Career Counseling section and the young lady there was clueless about I was talking about. She referred me to Hall B and when I got there the guy looked irritated. His facial expression was NOT friendly when I asked questions he sounded like a programmed robot...He was busy on the computer,he had no eye contact at all.I don't understand why are they there to assist people if this is their attitude.

I know plenty of people who have huge opinions regarding the admin and structure of the UNISA system and management. I haven't had any issues - I was pleasantly surprised with how quickly books and notices came; how easy the my.unisa website was to use and how exams ran exactly as they should at my venue. I actually have no complaints aside from the normal "I don't like waiting for my results" and "Does each course think this is my only course?!" complaints ;)

studying through correspondence is extremely challenging but what makes it worse is when cannot get a hold of anyone at the university to assist or simply to give information. Unisa take a while to respond to emails and they no longer assist via telephone. It is very frustrating.

I'm in my 3rd year at the moment, and this semester has been a disaster from the get go. I registered last November, and only just received the last of my study material a couple of weeks ago - my fees were paid up in full when I registered. From not having printed study guides for students for certain modules, to staff not responding to emails at all, to the assignment submission option on the online portal not working when you need it the most, this really has been a disaster of a semester. It just seems to me like there is no foresight and planning, which I cannot understand because Unisa should know that there is always an influx of students at the beginning of the year with learners having matriculated. They really should be more prepared for the number of students that are registering.

Easy to register for a new semester once you're already registered. Course material delivered in a reasonable amount of weeks. Some of the course material for certain subjects are detailed and proved a substantial amount of information, where as other subjects are extremely limited and 90% of the time refers one to a text book chapter. Many of the staff are unhelpful. When making telephonic inquiries the staff are clueless and end up transferring your call to different branches throughout South Africa and eventually back to the branch which you started at.

Easy to register online and at school once you've applied. Many divisions available to attend to your needs. "Ask Me" personnel are always there to assist. Don't attend this school if you're not self-driven! There's no lecturers to hold your hand.

I have been a student at UNISA for a number of years, their facilities & academic performance speak an abundance for what they do for students, although I must say the staff at the campus' are seriously lacking in the service department.
I have had no problem with dealing with staff through a telephonic matter though.

Being a new student at UNISA, I have bitter-sweet feelings toward their services. The fact that UNISA allows students who may not usually have an oppotunity to study, a chance at a bright future, leaves me nothing short of appreciative and impressed. However, the staff at the UNISA campus are extremely unhelpful and incompetent, to say the least. When approached for assistance, I found the man whose job it would be to assist me, playing with a pen in a bored fashion. He barely listened to my question and said that I should come back the next day, after I had queued outside for 5 hours in the sun.
UNISA also randomly changed my venue of examination..and cannot be contacted telephonically. Mixed feelings toward them indeed!

I went to UNISA this morning. I am an external UNISA library user - A must for writing up a masters dissertation! I am super impressed with their resources, the library is such quality it puts the other academic libraries in the area to shame. In fact, although I am technically an external library user at 2 other universities in the area, I only go to UNISA - well impressed :) One thing which got my feathers ruffles today was more on their organisation on a whole, off I went with my card in tact on an "academic" geeky mission :) and I couldn't get into the library cos my card wasn't activated (after going to admin purely for activation), so I went to information to request activation and had to go to the other side of the campus (about 1km) just for a 1 minute process. Previously, they could do this right next to the library, it was immensely frustrating. So although their new buildings are pretty, really UNISA some practicality also needs to be brought into this - I'll call it logical reasoning!! If they sort this part out, I'll be well impressed with the place overall...

I completed my Honours Degree through Unisa; since it is an Open Distance Learning institution it is convenient especially to those who want to study and work at the same time. I am unhappy with the fact that in order to do your Masters Degree in Psychology you have to go to Pretoria because they don't have the necessary facilities in Durban even though the demand for this Degree is substantially high in Durban. It is also difficult to contact lecturers and use them as referees because many of them don't remember students because they only have a couple of classes where they come to meet students.

Instead of moving forward, UNISA has decided to go a step back in my opinion, by no longer offering telephonic support. The sms system which they implemented instead, does not work.

IF there is a response, it's usually after you don't need it anymore. UNISA is a money making scheme - it's a business...not an Educational Institute.

It's a sad representation of South Africa and those qualifications to me are not legitimate.
