We had occasion to meet our daughter flying in to KSI from Johannesburg. I will not attempt to determine why it was neccessary to build this airport (and close down the old ?), but lets say this : Fabulous approach road to the facility (I have forgotten what a new road feels like to drive on), and easy to find parking entrance, with logical park and move forward sort of design ! So this was quick and logical and one walks directly into the airport (Somewhat similar to that HUGE Shopping Centre down the road at Umhlanga methinks ?). Nice logical straight stripe plan / layout with east west main 'sugar cane' concourse (unlike the neat but somewhat 'Heath Robinson' that is OR Tambo !), perhaps a bit small considering all that has gone into this facility when there is a crowd arriving and a large aircraft arriving , but nonetheless functional. We met our daughter complete with luggage, and were quickly and efficiently out of parking (bit of congestion at paypoints) and on our way. I question whether this facility would really be able to handle any serious international flight volumes ?

Parking is good as is the safety and the amenities but what really makes me laugh is that this is called an International airport!!! Why waste all that money building a new airport when the old airport was perfect? Emirates does operate from there but then you can never fly anywhere direct except to Dubai otherwise you have to first catch a plane to Joburg and get your International flight from there. As with Cape Town International there is the HUGE problem of only being allowed 20kgs luggage when going overseas because you first have to fly domestic. I find this to be a terrible mistake made with this airport and the Airports company should sort something out as this is not on. You fly back from your holiday and 10kgs of your luggage has to tossed in a bin (so they say) or you have to pay a fortune for extra weight. It is an inconvenience and until they sort this out name this airport King Shaka Airport or Durban Airport but take out the International until they get International airlines and routes!!!!

I am still in total disbelief that so much money was spent in building this so called International airport when the only International airline that flies from King Shaka is Emirates!!!!! I think maybe Air Mauritius does but only at certain times which is not always convenient for many people. I do not know why they wasted so much time and money and workers to build an airport that is so far out of the way you have to leave home at least 3 hours prior to departure due to the terrible traffic congestion en route. If you are flying DBN-JHB then I suggest rather drive as you will get there sooner.

Getting information, or actually finding someone to get information from, is a daunting task. Nobody knows anything, nobody is where they should be and the entire airport is not very well run. Flights are delayed, there is not enough seating for passengers waiting to board or for people waiting to pick someone up. In fact the seating at International arrivals (for the one and only flight ONCE a day, which is Emirates) is disgusting!!!! There is not enough place to even stand and wait for your family to arrive. The crowd of people waiting there is horrific and you feel like you are about to be stampeded to death.

The amenities are not too bad, toilets are very clean but I do not believe that the hand blowers to dry your hands are very good, I think that more germs are spread that way and perhaps this airport should change to paper towels as it is more sanitary. A lot needs to be done if this airport wants to make the grade!!!!!

I wasn't sure what to expect when I booked my first flight to the new King Shaka airport but I was pleasantly surprised! Airports are really something we get right in this country. I've now made a half dozen trips to King Shaka, most recently in December, and it's always pleasant, clean, there are nice shops and restaurants and the transport is well marked.

Despite the fact that Durban had to get an INTERNATIONAL airport this certainly is not one!!!! So much money spent by the Government for this great new big airport that has almost no international flights (except for Emirates and maybe air mautitius) I find that the money was wasted in building it. It is far away from everywhere and driving there is an absolute nightmare due to the heavy traffic. The airport itself is not wonderful, parking fees are so high you do not even want to consider parking, rather pick up the person you are fetching from the pick up area. There are not many shops and restaurants as you would expect to find at an International airport.
This entire project was a complete waste of time and it is disgraceful to have such an inept airport.

So who can forget the building of the new airport in Durban… they said bigger and better, yes I’ll agree it’s bigger than the old airport and it’s better in some way than the old airport. Let’s start with the parking more than enough parking but big negative is that it’s extremely expensive.
The airport has a lot of shops, and restaurants it even has a Woolworths which is a positive. I found myself to be a little bit lost as the signage seems to be lacking and the airport staff where nowhere to be seen and the ones I did encounter were a bit rude, but I managed to make my way to departures.
The big negatives for me is the location is a big far out of Durban, there is not enough seating and the biggest let down is that there is no viewing deck so you can’t see any planes land or take off.

Wow this was a shocking experience, all the hype around this airport is incorrect, The parking is just way over priced, the staff are seem to be unfriendly unhappy and unhelpful...There is not enough seating and the most disappointing of all is that there are no views of the runways so you can't see any airplanes landing or taking off ,and I feel it's a bit far out of Durban... The good points are there are enough restaurants and a Woolworths, A person can see it's a new airport and it's quite modern... So in my opinion it's mainly unhappy staff that was responsible for my unhappy experience

Getting information out of anybody at this airport is like trying to get water in a desert!!! Amenities are not too bad but seriously this airport needs some seating on the departure floor, everybody stands around because there is nowhere to sit!!!!

Restaurants are great, a bit pricey but not too bad. Cost of parking is disgusting!!!! SO expensive!!! AIrport is also in a terrible location that is so far out of town you might as well drive to your destination instead of flying!!!!!!!

This has to be my favourite airport. It's a bit of a challenge find the airport as teh signage is not teh best off the highway. The airport is spacious with the right mix of restaurants and leisure stores. The Woolies is a popular choice, especially if we need to grab a few holiday items. It really does make life convenient.
