Tournaments
On behalf of Starlings, a really big thank you for such a special event. It goes down as the best volleyball tournament I’ve experienced. I can only imagine the time and effort you put in. This is becoming more than a volleyball tournament, it’s becoming an experiential event. So here is my 6 point feedback to raise the bar:
1) Increase the number of days: The number of teams will increase, particularly in the female category.
2) Introduce age categories: Consider introducing some of the categories for males and females, similar to the world masters. Many people under 40 wanted to participate…same with people over 50. But it’s unfair for a 55 year-old to complete against a 40 year-old. This tournament should be about “changing lives” and people will play “For the love of sport”. I’m happy to assist the organising committee on formatting such a tournament.
3) Time between games: As the tournament gets into the knockout phases, teams need at least a 45 min recovery time. Back-to-back games does not allow for teams to: form and discuss game tactics; rub-out those slight niggles; and prepare the nutrients. Allow for a 5 min warm-up on court.
4) Onsite physio students: If we can extend negotiate to have the students till the beginning of the finals, it would be great.
5) African Masters: Every 2 years, let’s think about inviting international clubs. Every continent has an international Masters tournament every 2nd year, except Africa.
6) Parties: The social and networking is the biggest benefit of the Masters tournaments. Consider introducing an after-party, possibly with the prize-giving, and let people socialise, drink and dance. That’s the best part of Masters sport…not everyone comes to win medals.
