Midmar Dam is a combined gravity & earth-fill type dam and recreation area located near Pietermaritzburg (near Howick), South Africa. Boating, swimming, waterskiing, picnicing, and fishing are popular pastimes at Midmar Dam. Each year, the Midmar Mile swimming race is held there, which organizers call the worlds largest open water swimming event.

Another super public facility with caravan / camping parks,as well as picnic facilities. Great for watersports, this clean and picturesque facility is great in summer, but can be windswept and bitter during the winter months during bad weather. Incredibly hectic over the time of the world famous "Midmar Mile", it is quite spectacular watching the various categories / heats of swimmers pound across the 1.6 km stretch of water. The dam wall is also an impressive sight, particularly when the dam is full and the spillway is in full swing !

I loved my day at this dam, it is perfect for a family outing, a picnic or just a braai. The place is well kept and very neat and tidy. It is very safe with lots of security. The shop is a bit expensive but that seems to be the norm these days. Other than that it is in the KZN midlands and there is so much to do whilst on your way. A great place, with enjoyment for everyone. Water sports is a must and the Midmar Mile is really something to see.

I went water rafting at this dam as well as absailing down the dam wall! It was great fun. The atmosphere is so peaceful and calm. The views are spectacular. It's a great place for family outings and fun adventurous weekends with friends.

If you are holidaying in the Natal Midlands, this will surely be one of your leisure destinations. Located close-by is the Howick Falls. It is one of my favourite fishing destinations. If you avoid the entrance in the northerly direction, you can fish at the "mouth" of the Dam. It's a popular location for line and fly-fishing. The water is clean, so you are safe to dip your toes into the water. You may need to leave before sunset, as I'm not sure how safe the place is.

In the Dam, there are great recreational facilities but try to ge there early. The place gets really packed.
